Why is my CV never read?
The short answer: it is read — but by a machine first. And that machine filters out up to 75% of all applications before a recruiter ever lays eyes on them.
The invisible hurdle is called ATS
Almost every company beyond a certain size uses an Applicant Tracking System (ATS): Workday, SuccessFactors, Personio, Umantis. The software parses your CV, searches for keywords and assigns a score. Only those who pass the filter land on a human screen.
That means: you can be the perfect candidate — if your CV doesn't «speak» the system's language, you get rejected without a human ever reading your name. More background:What is an ATS?
The 4 most common reasons for the silent rejection
- •Keyword filters: The ATS expects the exact terms from the job ad. Write «customer support» where it expects «account management» and your score drops — even though it's the same skill.
- •Parsing errors: Two-column layouts, tables, graphics and headers/footers are misread by many systems. Your work experience lands in the wrong field — or nowhere at all.
- •Missing structure: Without clear sections (experience, education, skills) the parser can't find your data. What looks pretty to humans is invisible to machines.
- •Generic wording: «Team player, motivated, resilient» appears in every second application. ATS and recruiters filter for the concrete: numbers, technologies, results.
